Each time a major honors show nears, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
