The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
